English

The quality of learning and teaching in the English Department is good with outstanding features and the subject is widely respected in the school and enjoyed by the students. The Department have high expectations and maintain high standards. Examination results have been very good, both at KS3 and KS4.

English classes are set according to ability in all years. In Years 7 and 8 setting occurs across year halves and in years 9, 10 and 11 setting occurs across the whole year group. The Key Stage 4 Curriculum is based on the AQA GCSE English 3702 Specification A and the AQA GCSE English Literature 3712 Specification A.

The Department encourages pupil participation in a range of extra-curricular activities. Pupils shadow the Carnegie Medal and other reading awards. Participation in Rotary Youth Speaks has been encouraged and the pupils have performed commendably, having finished in first and second place in recent years. Theatre trips and attendance at GCSE Poetry Live are regular events. Poets and theatre groups visit the school each year.
