Sport
All students are encouraged to take part in sporting activities, mainly through inter-tutor group competitions e.g. cross country, indoor 5-a-side football, team games and athletics. To encourage teamwork, all students are expected to take part in competitive sporting events. Good sportsmanship – coping with success and failure – is important to sports teaching at St Bede’s, as is socialising with other players.
St Bede’s offers a range of team and individual sports, with fixtures usually held on weekday afternoons. There are school teams in football, rugby, hockey, netball, basketball, cricket, rounders and athletics. Teams are chosen from those who work hard in lessons and attend after-school clubs. However, students who face transport difficulties will not lose team places due to missed practices. We practise equal opportunities in sport. In recent years we have had great success in rugby, football, basketball, netball, hockey and athletics.

For a week at the end of the summer term, students join in a programme of very different curricular activities both in and outside school. The main activities offered include “The Bede Trail” based in Durham for Year 7’s, a trip to Paris for Year 8’s, a history trip to Belgium and Holland for Year 9’s, and work experience for Year 10’s. There is also a range of local activities including various sports activities, first aid training, film and animation, and craft.
Duke of Edinburgh Award
St Bede’s is a centre for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Meetings, which are open to Upper School students, are held after school. Students work towards bronze and silver awards in conjunction with former students returning to complete their gold awards. Over 60 students are currently working towards an award. More details are available from the school.
Charging
Parents are required to make a reasonable contribution to meals and accommodation on residential trips. A charge is made for musical instrument tuition. In respect of other activities, parents will be asked to make voluntary contributions to cover the costs of activities which cannot be met fully from school funds. A copy of the full Charging and Remissions
Policy can be obtained from school.
Instrument Tuition
This is available in brass, woodwind and string instruments, piano and drum kit. Details of charges and how to apply for tuition can be obtained directly from Cambridgeshire Music. Students who receive free school meals are not expected to pay. Students receiving tuition are entered for the Associated Board examinations and are encouraged to join the school orchestra.
