Our school is inter-church, based on a partnership of goodwill between denominations that, in their different ways, offer something to enrich us all. The unity that results is rooted in mutual understanding, a respect for each other's differences and a desire for co-operation between different Christian traditions. As educationalists, we recognise that many youngsters are exploring faith and belief, and forming their ideas about life and its possible meanings. As a Christian school we ensure that all who wish can practise their faith and that all students hear Christian views on moral, social and spiritual issues. |
The Chaplain complements the work of the teaching staff. She is a full time member of staff who may be asked to contribute in the classroom, but isn't a teacher. A responsibility is carried for the spiritual care of both staff and students as well as a liturgical role. A Chaplaincy Council composed of staff, governors and representatives of the Trust supports the work of the Chaplain.
With the RE department and pastoral staff, the Chaplain organises our special 'Reflection Days'. These are an important opportunity for each year group to explore and discuss issues of faith. Different themes are developed using drama, music, art, sport, visits to Christian centres, visiting speakers and workshop leaders and, of course, prayer and worship.
Students have many opportunities to get involved in the school's Christian life. Recent activities include:
Students participate in an act of collective worship every day, either in assemblies or in their tutor groups. We have good links with local clergy and Christian youth worker, and visitors from across the denominations assist with assemblies and reflection days.
Anglican and Roman Catholic Eucharists are held regularly and are prepared by the students. The school year includes a Welcome Service, a Leavers' Service, and the celebration of both the major Christian Feasts and of the key events in the life of the school. Parents and carers also have opportunities to participate in acts of worship and Christian celebration.
Although we are a Christian school, and parents choose us for this reason, we acknowledge that parents have a right to withdraw their child from RE and collective worship.
